The Valley
In 1905, the power generation company EGASA built "Charcani I", the first hydroelectric power station on the waters of the Rio Chile, a green sanctuary amid the region's dry volcanoes, in the Charcani and Chilina valleys.
Others soon followed: "Charcani II" in 1912, then "III" in 1938, and so on, until today there are 6 power stations on the river, and plans for a 7th closer to Arequipa.
EGASA expropriates local residents in the course of its installations.
Those who remain no longer benefit from the diverted river water or the electricity it generates.
The "Charcani VII" project also threatens a whole stretch of the rio, since the company wants to divert its course and drain several kilometers of it.
Expropriated former residents, local residents, environmental activists, farmers... "The Valley" is the fight and the faces of those who want to save it.
A David versus Goliath struggle.
